Brand new to the leagues this season, GHC’s development side, Cavaliers, beat Addiscombe 4s 8-0 with one of the most satisfying games of the season - not because of the score, per se, but because of the attacking performance by the GHC U14s in the second half.
(Another credit to Matt Penney’s coaching of the age group and the experience the boys are getting by playing men’s hockey!)
Addiscombe are weak but they must have got a new GK, because he was good – and patrolled ALL parts of his D like a dervish – taking no prisoners in at least 6 first-half diving interventions.
However, at half time, with two goals from new boy Sammy D showing off some lovely skills at CF and last game’s MOM GK Dan - a mere spectator between the posts today - Cavaliers were an average team on course for an average result against Addiscombe.
A dynamic midfield of Mark Powell and the Frostic sub-team of Andy & Felix (the 3rd dad & lad combo to be selected for Cavaliers!), were dominant, with Sam C & Finlay C also showing impressive skills coming forward. Ewan French on the LW was playing his best ever Cavaliers game - keeping wide and employing sensible passing. As ever Mark Powell dominated the centre and sprayed the ball around.
In the second half, Cavaliers instigated a 2 touch tactic and WOW, FABULOOOOOOUS !!! The right hand side trio of Sam, Felix F& Xander flowed into superb action time and time again - a river in full flood leaving their left-sided defenders spinning like overweight ballerinas - and then feeding Sammy, who gratefully converted 2 more goals from a combination of powerful running with strong shooting and drag flicking.
Other goals from Cavaliers total dominance and great hockey went to Xander (brilliant when wide in the 2nd half), Finlay C, and then two for Felix.
Dan Hitchcox in goal got excited when oppo got a corner, but nothing came of it and generally captain Mike F, Finlay, Marcus Howe, & Daniel Schmeer (still recovering from altitude sickness having had a shot on goal in the first half), kept Addiscombe out by both showing great speed (well, not Mike!) and interceptions.
MOM was interesting. Dan & Sam couldn’t stay but there were still 5 nominations: Sammy, Xander, Felix, Andy & Daniel.
Despite 4 goals in his 1st game, Sammy suffered his first defeat of the afternoon as MOM went to Felix F who had showed great skill, decision making, hard work and tackling (well, dad Andy really played well and you can’t let your dad do better than you, can you ….?? ).
Cavaliers v Addiscombe 4s: Won 8-0.
