After nearly 2 months without a league game the Ladies 1st XI travelled to Teddington for their opening game of 2020. With half the team well rested and the other half refocussing from their indoor exploits, there was eager anticipation for the game.
Guildford took the game to Teddington in an attacking manner and it was not long before the pressure paid off and the visitors took the lead with a goal from Kelly Taylor.
Teddington replied with a strong attack and equalised from a penalty corner.
The game settled down with Guildford having more possession but not capitalising on the attacks, indeed making unforced errors giving Teddington the opportunity to attack themselves. But Guildford’s defence was strong and were able to counter attack.
Midway through the first half, the benefits of the recent indoor play started to show with the two top scorers form that format scoring from a series of good passing balls, firstly from Kerryn Swanepoel and a minute later Maddie Richardson. Guildford were in control of the game now and at 2 minutes from the end of the first half Guildford had a great attack from Kerryn into the D, passing to Kerry Jennings who scored to give the visitors a 4-1 lead at half time.
The second half, Guildford worked on reducing unforced errors and dominated the second half. The whole team were now more attuned to the faster style that the indoor players had brought to the game and this frustrated the Teddington side.
Guildford created a lot of opportunities resulting in three more goals, a second from Kerry Jennings and two from Maddie Richardson, giving her a hattrick. The final score 7-1.
