Ladies' 5s Raining Goals in Torrential Rain

 23rd Nov 2019

On a day of torrential rain and wind the Guildford Ladies' 5s took on Leatherhead on a pitch that certainly did not need watering with the perpetual rain.

The early stages of the game were pretty equal with Guildford just about shading it in terms of possession and passing, but Leatherhead had the first short corner and though they did not get an initial shot away the ball came back into the D and was finished for a 1-0 lead to Leatherhead.

But this merely woke Guildford up and they equalised when shortly after a strong run and pass from the right side was deflected skillfully in by Shona.

Guildford were running the game now and after a an interception from a clearance, Ellie was one-on-one with the Leatherhead keeper and tucked it away neatly for a 2-1 lead to Guildford.

Becs added a third after a good run and cross from Freya before Freya then scored herself, driving into the penalty area and taking an early shot which surprised the keeper at the near post. 4-1 at half time.

Guildford came out with appetite for further goals in the second half, and after a penalty corner shot went narrowly wide the Guildford right was the channel again as Eleanor F dribbled well to the by line and crossed strongly for Shona to sweep home.

It was raining goals now and good dribbling and passing between Freya and Eleanor G ended up with a close range finish for Ali and the final goal for Guildford came again from a right side attack, with Ali once again finishing it off neatly.

Whilst Guildford clearly dominated the game overall it was not without incident for the Guildford defence with Amelia in the Guildford goal making a number of good saves and keeping everyone on their toes by standing up the pitch with her defenders at times!

Hopefully not too many games need to be played in those conditions but the team played some good hockey and will have looked forward to the heat of the clubhouse or own house after finishing.

Overall it was good entertainment for those that braved the weather to spectate and support.  My apologies if I have got some names wrong in this, I think I will blame the conditions...
