Despite coming off second best for the first time this season, the GHC Men's 1s were better on Saturday than we were last week against West Hampstead away.
Perhaps it had to do with the supportive crowd we had at home or the cool winter air fuelling us (and them) on. Whatever the motive, it put us ahead with an early goal from Ross Fergusson.
Unfortunately, our lead was short-lived, and Wycombe put together the best 20 minutes of their season so far, to go 3-1 up at the break.
An inspired second half saw GHC Men’s 1s turn up the intensity, demonstrating we are deserved of our place at the top of the table. Everyone worked hard on and off the ball to make sure we kept one foot in the game.
It was relentless, high tempo pressing and purposeful possession, until eventually the Wycombe defence slowly started to show some cracks. It was a Ross Fergusson and Dan Fox corner combination that got the second and then a neat deflection from Matt Fitter that drew us level at 3-3.
Unfortunately, after a narrow miss for GHC to go ahead, it was a swift and clinical counter from Wycombe that sealed the victory for the men in blue.
Well played Wycombe HC.
Wycombe were an absolute pleasure to play, especially considering it was our first defeat. It couldn’t have come against a better bunch of blokes who deserved to go home with all three points in the bag. Good luck for the remainder of their season.
