The Guildford Ladies 5s travelled deep into the heart of West London for their game against Richmond on a sunny morning.
The first half was a story of sustained Guildford possession and pressure with several efforts on goal by Guildford but the defence had to be alert as Richmond hit Guildford on the break twice forcing India to make good saves. Guildford battled well across the pitch to keep the pressure on showing some neat passing both long and short. In spite of this the first short corner only came after about 30 mins but unfortunately for Guildford came to nothing.
Richmond had their first period of continuous pressure towards the end of the first half but Guildford held strong and it was 0-0 at half time.
The second half started with an early chance for Guildford which was once again saved by the Richmond keeper followed by another short corner which once again came to nothing although Guildford did get a shot in. Richmond were still in the game though and India made another save at the near post after a good through ball from the Richmond midfield.
Eventually the Guildford pressure had to tell and after some excellent persistence by Rosie in the D her cross was finished by Becs and Guildford’s pressure was rewarded. Guildford had the wind in their sails now and forced another short corner after a strong run into the D by the Guildford midfield and the ensuing shot from the short corner by Sasha forced another good save from the Richmond keeper.
This pattern followed again shortly but this time Sasha’s shot on goal was too good for the Richmond keeper at the short corner and Guildford were 2-0 up. But Guildford were not finished and a terrific early pass from Eleanor released a willing runner and the ensuing cross was swept home by Shona and Guildford were firmly in control of the game now.
It was not all over though and Guildford’s defence still had some work to do which they did well repelling Richmond towards the end including from a short corner. Guildford tried to finish with a flourish after a good passing move but it was not to be this time and 3-0 was the final score.
A good team performance and enjoyable to watch. A special coach’s mention went to the team’s two youngest players – Abi and Eleanor, playing sweeper and central midfield respectively – who controlled large parts of the game keeping Richmond pinned back and to India, as a part time keeper, for a number of important saves.
