Saturday afternoon saw Winchester arrive at Broadwater School, the home of Guildford Hockey Club, to take on the Men’s 1st team, currently top of the South Premier Hockey league.
With the top four teams establishing their places in the league over the first six matches, the chasing pack were hot on our heels, hoping for an upset. Winchester got off to the perfect start and scored a goal within the first five minutes from a tidy turnover. This may have been just the wakeup call the Guildford 1st XI needed to spring into action.
For the next 65 minutes Guildford were ruthless, from a goal-scoring point of view at least. Although GHC managed to put 10 goals in the back of the net, we are sure ourperformance can still be even better. Sticking to the process remains the key objective in the weeks ahead.
Some excellent individual performances this weekend came from new club member Josh Moore and the club’s leading goal scorer, Ross Fergusson. Fergusson scored an impressive six goals against an experienced Winchester side.
The 1st XI and the Club as a whole are on an upward trajectory. We have the players and the support staff to achieve promotion, but we have a lot of maturing to do over the coming weeks if we want to make a serious push up the leagues.
