The Ladies' 1s took to the road (or train) again this week and travelled to Battersea Park to take on one of the pre-season favourites to win the league, London Wayfarers.
The team were keen to bounce back from last week's narrow defeat and took a very positive approach to the game. The whistle blew and Wayfarers took an initial attack running around the Guildford defence and finding the goal inside the first minute.
Guildford responded immediately and 3 minutes later won a penalty corner. This was successfully converted by Anja Atkin to bring the scores level.
Guildford continued to dominate and it was not long before Kate (Wooly) Wooldridge took a sixteen passing to Emma Stewart who drove into Wayfarers 25 and passed to Anja who shot to give Guildford the lead.
Wayfarers responded hard and it was not long before they scored a second to level the game. The game continued at a pace and in the final minute of the half Guildford won another penalty corner which Kelly Taylor converted to give Guildford the lead at halftime.
The second half continued with end to end play and it was not long before Wayfarers scored another goal to bring the scores level.
With 12 minutes remaining, some great passing from Guildford put Kerry Jennings into a position to shoot and she scored Guildford’s 4th and arguably best goal of the game to regain the lead.
However, 2 minutes later Wayfarers equalised. The home team had some momentum and sniffed a win was possible and 3 minutes from the end were awarded a penalty corner which they converted to take the lead for the first time since the opening minute!
Guildford did not give up and with some quick substitution had four attackers on the pitch and with the final play of the game Kelly came out victor in a goal mouth scramble to score her second and Guildford’s equaliser. The final score was 5-5.
Man of the match was Niamh Mann
TheLladies are at home on Saturday taking on Reading.
Half time words of wisdom – don’t remember the bit “equalize in the final minute being part of the plan!!!!”
