On a wet Sunday Guildford U14A Girls were away to Surbiton.
Surbiton once again provided good opposition and were into their stride earlier than Guildford with sustained pressure and good possession. Guildford began to gain a foothold after the initial pressure and gained a stroke of luck when a well-flicked penalty corner struck the Guildford post and was scrambled to safety.
Guildford struggled to provide any attacking pressure early on, trying to play on the break but defended well as a team as Surbiton dominated midfield with good stick work and neat passing. A loose Guildford pass resulted in another penalty corner to Surbiton, but thankfully nothing came of it.
Guildford then went close on the break as they began to build their attacks and their second penalty corner of the half lead to the still amusing spectacle of a full team attack on the edge of the D. The result was a good save by the Surbiton keeper and it was half time – 0-0.
The half time talk clearly had the desired effect as Guildford were out of the blocks quickly with the whole team pushing higher up the pitch. Chances were being created - but the final touch was just not there when required - and Surbiton scored on the break after a somewhat contentious decision.
As is often the way, momentum meant that Surbiton had a period of pressure and scored a second despite a good save by Poppy initially. Guildford heads did not go down and the girls battled hard and were rewarded when Camilla finished on the rebound.
Unfortunately time was not on Guildford’s side and despite continued attacking from Guildford the final whistle went and it was 2-1 to the home team. Despite the final result the girls battled well and it was an entertaining game to watch.
They will have other days when those close shots go in!
