Saturday saw the ladies' 1’s take the long trip to Witney. The expectation was that the game would be close and the 70 minutes proved that to be the case...
The first half started with both sides sharing possession and having opportunities to score. Libby and Jenna held the back really well which started to frustrate the opposition. However, Witney took advantage of a Guildford mistake and they found themselves with a one-on-won with Alice in the Guildford goal. They took the lead and that was the score at half time.
Guildford had the better start to the second half and had the better possession, but could not convert any of the opportunities. Witney were looking like gaining a second goal, which they did.
Guildford threw caution to the wind and started to press, creating more and more opportunities with a number of shots hitting the posts and narrowly missing deflections. Eventually Kelly Taylor found the back of the net to bring the score to 2-1.
Witney stood up to the pressure and countered. One occasion resulted in a short corner. This was “saved” by a foot, resulting in a P flick. Alice judged this correctly lunging to her right saving the shot.
With only 5 minutes to play Guildford sensed an opportunity and attacked very hard, but Witney got another short corner and scored a third.
Guildford did not give up and another attack from Guildford allowed Anja Atkin to bring the score back to 3-2. Guildford were fighting and all the action was in Witney’s D and one attack in the last 2 minutes saw Guildford put the ball in the Witney net. The goal, however, was disallowed. Guildford were awarded a short corner but could not force the draw!
The man of the match was Alice Cobb.
