Ladies 1s Open South Prem Account with a Win

 21st Sep 2019

20190921-Ladies1s-TeamThe ladies opened the 2019/20 season with a match at Maidenhead 1’s.

The team were full of expectation and chomping at the bit to get the season under way. On a very hot and sunny afternoon they took to the pitch warming up under the water cannons!

Guildford immediately took the game to Maidenhead and with the first attack Anja Atkin made a run into space and a well-timed pass to Kerry Jennings allowed her to open the score in the first minute.

Guildford continued to place Maidenhead under pressure which the home side found frustrating. Guildford were, however, making one or two mistakes and Maidenhead were able to exploit one such mistake allowing them to break and they equalised mid way through the half. Guildford continued to dominate but were unable to capitalise.

A half time “talk” from the coach sent the Guildford Ladies out with a fresh determination. They attacked from the start. Shortly after that Maidenhead had a free hit that Lara Vincent intercepted and put the ball into the D and Hannah Bodoano found the back of the net with her opening goal of the season, to reinstate Guildford’s lead.

From the restart Guildford won the ball in open play and some good passing to the forwards resulting in Anja again finding space and a pass to Hannah allowed her to score her second and Guildford’s third goal.

Maidenhead started again and after one attack Guildford took possession and quickly moved the ball up the pitch, Lara drove from the right into the centre and passed to Kerry, who scored her second and Guildford’s forth. These three goals all scored in the space of five minutes indicated how the game would finish, but as Guildford proved in the season’s final game of last season you can turn this score line around, so they kept their foot on the gas.

At the 20 minute mark they won a short corner. This was struck by Julia (JJ) Blackstock and deflected in by Lara to take the score to 5-1. Toward the end of the game Maidenhead scored a consolation goal, to bring the final score to 5-2.

Hannah Bodoano was awarded man of the match. We celebrated the win back at Maidenhead’s club house, together with wishing both Jenna and Hannah Happy Birthdays!!! (It was thirsty work for our captain!!!!)

This Saturday sees the Ladies first home game and they are looking forward to taking on Teddington at 12:45pm on the new Blue pitch at GHC.
