The Ladies 1st XI travelled to Basingstoke for their final - and potentially toughest - pre-season friendly.
Basingstoke were promoted last season to the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference West; they were building on their preparations for this season’s league fixtures and fielded a strong team.
Guildford’s new-look squad welcomed some new players from outside the club and also two GHC junior players who had been part of last season’s EH Cup silver medal winning squad Esta Greenhalgh and Emma Haynes.
We are also delighted that Goalkeeper, Alice Cobb, has decided to take a year out before going to university to concentrate on all things hockey! Libby Leadbeater, will be captaining the League team for the season ably assist by Julia “JJ” Blackstock, who will captain our EH Cup team.
So, to the game…in a blisteringly hot afternoon the game commenced at a fierce pace with Guildford having the majority of possession. This continued through the first quarter until Basingstoke were awarded a short corner which saw the shot initially saved but that unfortunately deflected into our own net.
The second quarter was played in a similar fast pace and Guildford created a good number of opportunities and also defended well. Confidence was growing between the new and existing players.
The second half was played at the same fast pace, but Guildford were creating the greater opportunities and it was not long before an equaliser was scored.
The fourth quarter continued at the fast pace, a good test for the players, given the heat and whilst the score was not important, in the context of the game it was good to see a draw.
One more week of training on our new home pitch and then to our first league match away at Maidenhead on Saturday.
