GU10s Retain Canterbury Invitational Title

 31st Mar 2019

20190331-GU10-1After last years Girls Under 10 victory at the annual Canterbury invitational tournament, we were very hopeful we could achieve something similar in 2019...

We arrived to a cold and miserable day in Kent having had the most wonderful weather the day before. And despite the clock change everyone arrived in good time for a good warm up and discussion of tactics.

To win the tournament the team would need to do well through three group matches and then enter a mini league to see who came out on top.

I’m very proud to say the Guildford U10 girls succeeded and won the tournament!

Every game was tough but we set ourselves up to be defensively strong with Beth as keeper and the two Issy’s in defence. In Midfield we had Emily, Bea and Martha and up front the team had Niamh - there were no subs.

In every game the team battled really hard. They scored some great goals and most importantly did not concede any! The girls made it through the group stages in first place and then eventually won through the final stages to take the tournament title.

They battled so hard for each other all the way though and it was so good to see the more attacking players such as Niamh, Bea and Emily coming back to help the defenders. In the Middle of the park Martha had to do a lot of work to help both defensively and in attack but as each game went on the team did better and better at helping each other out. Defensively the Issy’s and Beth were amazing and to have no goals conceded was a great achievement.

Going forward Emily did a great job on the right steaming past the opposition and setting up goals for the team. Bea did a fantastic job on the left coming into the ‘D’ on the back post and scoring from Emily’s crosses. We also had Niamh up front who scored a great goal from a short corner and not only gave the opposition defenders a hard time but also helped in defence when needed.

As mentioned above the U10 Girls eventually won the tournament and it was based on a season of learning together on a Friday night from all the coaches and a cold Sunday in Kent battling for each other to win the trophy.

Thank you as well to all the parents for an early start on clock change weekend!
