Guildford Ladies 1’s travelled to promotion-hunting East Grinstead on Saturday. It was a must win game for EG and Guildford were looking to round off their League winning season in style...
The game started at frenetic pace and within seven minutes Guildford opened the scoring with a well worked series of passes and Hannah Bodoano finding the net.
Two minutes later, East Grinstead equalised capitalising on a rare defensive error. The momentum was firmly with East Grinstead and a minute later following an aerial from their midfield they scored again to take the lead.
Guildford were still under pressure and it was not long before East Grinstead extended their lead to 3-1.
Guildford battled and forced a short corner. Alice O’Hagan stepped forward and converted to bring the score to 3-2. East Grinstead still had the upper hand and scored again shortly before half time. 4-2.
Following a “motivational” half time team talk, the second half got under way. East Grinstead sensed a big win over the league champions and took the upper hand and scored their 5th goal.
Guildford then found all the good parts of what has brought them success this season. With 15 minutes to go, an attack on the East Grinstead goal resulted in being awarded a penalty flick. Alice O’Hagan stepped up and scored to bring the score to 5-3.
It was Guildford’s turn to sense an opportunity and they turned the screw on with some great runs; with 10 minutes to go Anja Atkin scored to bring the score to 5-4.
Five minutes later, Kat Percy scored to bring the scores level!
With three minutes to go Alice O’Hagan was subbed on as a forward (for the first time in a couple of seasons!!) and her first touch was to receive a pass from Harriet Martin leaving her with a one-on-one with the keeper which she converted, securing her hat-trick and the winning goal! Final result 6-5 to Guildford.
This rounded of a great season for the Guildford Ladies 1’s league champions, two years running and back to back promotions!
