It is official, the Guildford Hockey Club Men’s 1st XI are Champions of the South Prem Div 2 league for the 2018/19 season. Having secured promotion a few weeks ago, the next target was to finish top of the league. Beating Wycombe away at Bisham Abbey was enough to secure the title.
On Saturday the Men headed up to Wycombe to play one of the more organised sides in this league. Coached by GB player Ian Sloan, they are a well drilled side. Fortunately for us it was once again our leading goal scorer, Fergusson, who broke the deadlock. That was it, a 1-0 victory that sealed the deal for GHC.
This season has seen several highlights culminating in the league title this weekend. The good number of home-grown talent who were given an opportunity to play for the 1st XI was fantastic. This is something that is unique to Guildford HC - we have created a platform that promotes our most talented juniors into the Men’s 1st XI. Debuts-a-plenty, some old faces returning and the loyal players that have seen this team through some tough times have contributed greatly to our success.
Of course, we are immensely grateful to the team who work behind the scenes to put it all together. Gary Boucher (Head Coach), Tony Hall (Manager) and James Relph (Player/Coach/Manager/Recruitment officer) have all played integral roles in the success of this team – thank you!
GHC M1 1-0 Wycombe
