Men's 1s at Fortress Broadwater

 16th Mar 2019

20181013-M1sTeamThe Guildford Hockey Club Men’s 1s have gone through the entire season without losing a game at Broadwater School, their home ground. Saturday’s game against promotion contenders Tulse Hill and Dulwich was no different.

It was a windy afternoon, making it a good toss to win so that we could play into the elements for the first 35 minutes. The first half felt drawn out, battling into the steady head wind and trying desperately to hold onto the ball. Our defenders were on fire and held the opposition off enabling us to go into the break a goal ahead.

With Tulse Hill chasing and the wind at our backs, the game was inevitably going to open up on either end of the pitch. Ross Fergusson almost broke the net with a spectacular corner routine - assisted by the wind, his strong flick sent the ball to the back of the net in a flash.

As the game matured, our consistent accurate passing and superb defensive work rate wore down the challenges from Tulse Hill and Dulwich. After scoring our third, Tulse Hill removed their keeper with 8 minutes to play, in a desperate bid to claw themselves back. Despite their brave efforts Guildford put a further two goals into an empty net, winning the game 5-0.

We are top of the South Prem 2, and having achieved promotion, now is not the time to let the standards drop. Win or lose on the weekend against high flyers Wycombe, it is important that the 1st XI finish in the manner we want to start the 2019/20 season.
