GU12 in Surrey Cup Progress to QFs

 14th Mar 2019

20190303-GU12-SurreyCupTeamGHC Under 12 Girls played in the Surrey Cup on Sunday - hosted at GHC. After a lot of hockey played this year the girls were well trained and motivated for the competition...

At the start of the day Libby stressed the key tactics and also the outcomes for the squad - enjoy it, learn and have some fun!!

v Surbiton (1-0 win)

It was a close game to start with but we had the majority of the ball with Holly and Abby solid at the back and the midfield working hard of Rosie in the middle, Martha on the right and Isla on the left. Liza was always a threat up front and all subs played a key part. Emily was great at the back, Ottakie showed a lot of skill on the left and Kirsten always working hard down the right flank. In goal Tabby was calm and talked to her defence constantly

We had a bundle of chances but their goalkeeper played well and we couldn’t quite score. The defence scrambled well to keep Surbiton out but the opposition got better as the game went on.

However, we maintained our calm and with a minute left of the game Liza smashed in a well taken chance high and to the left hand side of the goalie.  A tense but well deserved win with a lot of possession

Spencer B (3-0 win)

Next we played Spencer and we had a strong start and a scrambled goal followed from Kirsten.

We had most of the ball and we did well to maintain possession and keep attacking in the wider channels

Then lots of pressure and Kirsten scored again. After consistent pressure Liza rounded off a solid performance for the whole team with a 3rd goal

Reigate (1-0 win)

We then played a strong Reigate team and had a lot of the possession. Liza managed to score the first goal and we had a barrel load of chances. Reigate worked hard and we managed to stay nice and tight at the back and hussle in midfieled.

Final score was 1-0 but a strong win and a great way to top the group.

Quarterfinal v Wimbledon (1-0 loss in Golden Goal time)

We were then through with the other GU12 team to the quarterfinal where we played a strong Wimbledon u12 team.  Wimbledon had dominated their group scoring over 18+ goals in their 3 games with no real challenge. A very large and strong team faced us in the quarterfinals and the girls knew it would be tough but were undaunted.

In the game we had the majority of the ball and had a lot of chances by focussing on a high tempo passing game where we often went down the flanks to creat chances. The Wimbledon keeper had a strong game and saved several shots from our side. Wimbledon had their own chances but played a more individual game with a strong centre half driving through the middle. Rosie, Isla and others did well to tackle her often and keep the oppo out of our D many times.  As the game went on we kept passing the ball and one flowing move went from our own goal line to the Wimbledon D but we couldnt quite convert our chance.

The game was 0-0 in normal time and we then progressed to golden goal. Against the run of play Wimbledon scored the golden goal in the last play of the game and did well to beat Tabby at the far post after some good passing. It was the first time Tabby had a chance to touch the ball all day!

The Guildford girls played so well and despite the loss can be super proud of their overall day and season. We played some great passing hockey and have been pleased to welcome so many new players to the club. It has been great to see the side develop over the last few months. Our passing and movement was great and they helped well as a squad.

The squad will be stronger as a result of the experience and had a great spirit on display.

Libby and I cant be more proud of the squad and the whole age group for their attitude and effort. Well done for the whole of the u12s efforts this year and a MASSIVE thanks to Katie and Robert for their organisation and energy this year.  If the girls stay positive and keep working hard the results will follow in the years to come. A good day for the girls and thanks to all the support from parents on the day and Malcolm for umpiring.

Onward and upwards for the whole age group!!
