For some players a third match in five days saw a very different 1st XI team take on a full strength Havant team fighting for a place in the quarter finals of the Tier 2 England Hockey Cup.
With the Guildford team fielding only 2 players over the age of 18, the opportunity was there for the likes of Hannah Wyllie, Hannah Bodoano, Anja Atkin and Niamh Mann to step up and show strong leadership skills.
Together with old hands, Kelly Taylor and Julia Blackstock (couldn’t resist that – they’ve never felt old in a team before!!) they showed great determination and professionalism. Players stepping up from the 2nd XI took heart and confidence from them and performed really well.
Guildford opened the scoring early on with a nicely worked attack resulting in Emma Haynes opening the scoring. Guildford, continued to attack and Anja Atkin was creating some great runs, one of which resulted in her scoring to take the score to 2-0.
Havant fought hard and a deflected ball found the back of the Guildford net. The score at half time was 2-1, setting things up for an exciting second half.
The second half started in a similar way to the first and early on Guildford were awarded a short corner. Kelly Taylor converted to give Guildford the 2 goal cushion again. Havant made a number of quick breaks, which, in the main, Guildford dealt with well, but one attack took the score to 3-2.
Guildford fought back and within a few minutes Anja Atkin found the net to take the score to 4-2. The game continued with both side having opportunities. With 10 minutes to go Havant brought the score to 4-3. They continued to attack and with 3 minutes remaining found the back of the net to bring the scores level.
Guildford attacked very hard and Kelly found the net as the final whistle was blown. The goal was disallowed, and the game went to penalties which Guildford won 3-2.
Final score 4-4 (3-2 on penalties)
