Saturday saw Guildford welcome Havant to Broadwater. Guildford took to the pitch and, with their well-drilled warm-up out of the way, were fired up for this match; the away fixture at Havant had proved a pretty physical affair!!
Havant had pushback but Guildford’s press closed them down and from that, Guildford attacked resulting in a short corner. Alice O’Hagan successfully converted to give the home team an early lead.
Havant fought back and, whilst not having much possession, looked dangerous on the break. One opportunity they had punished Guildford to bring the scores level. Guildford immediately fought back and forced another short corner. The first shot was saved but Hetty Hayden - making her return to the team after having a baby - scored off the rebound.
Havant continued to fight and broke Guildford’s defence to leave a Havant player with a one-on-one with Guildford’s keeper. Alice Cobb came to the edge of the D forcing the Havant player to pass the ball, allowing time for the Guildford defence to get back. Libby Leadbeater then ensured that the ball didn’t find a Havant stick! Guildford took a 2-1 lead into half time.
The second half was dominated by Guildford and as Havant began to run out of energy the home team were able to create more opportunities and three further goals were scored by Hannah Bodoano, Kerry Jennings and Kelly Taylor. Final score of 5-1 to Guildford.
The Guildford Ladies 1st team have a break next Saturday but will have a busy week following that with a game against the British Army on 20 February, a home game on 23 February against fellow promotion contenders Hampstead and Westminster, and then a game in the round of 16 in the England Hockey knock-out Cup on 24 February.
