Thank goodness the away trip to London Academicals is done. This was always going to be a tough journey, made even tougher this weekend with several of the regular 1st XI unavailable.
Twelve GHC Men’s members made their way to Bermondsey Station to then make the short walk to the London Academicals home ground.
The home team kept the ball well but lacked any threat in the final third. The 12 GHC Men did the club proud this weekend. They played with discipline and purpose from start to finish. Returning 1st XI legends Will Gibson and Cam Rodgers put in the hard yards and certainly deserved their place in the side.
Ross Ferguson and Tom Gordon scored for Guildford, and while Academicals did not trouble the scorers, there were some outstanding performances from defenders Gibson, Rodgers, Vincent and Pearson who were forced to play the full 70 minutes at the back.
The highlight of the weekend came from my short trip to Broadwater on Saturday morning before heading off to London. Andrew Ferguson and his merry men were there in full force, showing what it means to be part of a club that has a fantastic culture. It was all hands-on deck with many of the Ladies’ 1st XI showing up to sweep the pitch so that the home games could be played.
These are the good people that make being a member of GHC an absolute pleasure. Thank you, Andrew, Jeremy and Mark. As a result, our Ladies 1s were straight back to their winning ways, continuing the good form they showed before Christmas.
Looking forward to the next challenge, a revived Slough team visit Broadwater on Saturday for a 3pm push back.
