Guildford Ladies 1s travelled to Epsom’s new pitch for their first league game since the 8th December. After two challenging friendlies with Maidenhead and a very strong Wimbledon – who fielded a large number of their national league players – the GHC Ladies were keen to re-start their league campaign.
Guildford started in a dominant fashion restricting Epsom to their half for the opening 10 minutes. It was not long before Guildford were awarded a short corner that Alice O’Hagan converted to take the lead. Epsom fought hard and had some counter attacks, one of which called upon the skills of Guildford keeper, Alice Cobb, to make a double save. Guildford continued to dominate with Epsom struggling to beat the Guildford press. Guildford were awarded further short corners, one of which found the back of the net, but was disallowed.
The second half continued in a similar way with Guildford having much of the possession, but with Epsom making good use of counter attacks. Guildford’s pressure was soon rewarded with a goal from open play by Kerry Jennings. Epsom did not give up and fought hard and eventually found the net to bring the score to 2 – 1. Guildford focused on keeping possession for the final few minutes with Rachel and JJ in particular frustrating the opposition by retaining the ball high in their half.
The final result 2 – 1 to Guildford extending their lead in the South Division 2 League to 7 points.
Saturday sees Guildford welcome Chiswick to Broadwater. Push back is 1:15, come and cheer on the GHC Ladies 1s!!
