The Under 10 Girls were out in force again today with Lightning, Storm and Fire teams all playing a series of matches. The future of GHC looks bright with this kind of commitment and quality (11 wins from 12)...
Lightning
Guildford’s U10 girls “Lightning” team played in a mini tournament at Reigate Grammar Priory Hockey Club. They played four matches against Horsham and against Reigate.
The girls played well as a team and won all four matches 2-0, 1-0, 2-1 and 1-0.
They rotated between positions so that they all took a turn playing in attacking, mid fielding and defending positions.
Goals were scored by Caitlin, Rithika, Cecily and Tamara.

They all had a great time and are looking forward to the next match!
Storm
Incredible start of the second half of the season for the Storm girls!
Before the tournament began we had a great team chat which encouraged the girls to put in practise all the things we have been talking at training. They were eager to go and showed great team commitment.
What I liked the most was the real team effort, communication between them and trusting each other on the field. We are finally using space and playing the ball wide and it is paying off. Fantastic hockey from everyone in the team and determination resulted in Storm winning all their four matches ( 3-0, 4-1, 2-0 and 4-1).
Niamh, Isobel and Bea were brilliant in attacking and managed to score some lovely goals as a result. Elsa and Martha supported the forwards constantly making it difficult for the opposition to attack. Grace and Mimi did a fantastic job at the back, using the ball wide and distributing it so well to the rest of the team support by Rosie who with a strong hits was clearing the balls and supporting the defence. Goals by Niamh, Isobel, Bea, Rosie and Elsa.
Well done girls for entertaining us; coaches and parents had a lot of fun. And thanks to parents for driving all the girls to Reigate. Here is to continuing improving, working together and having fun.

Fire
On Sunday 13th January post a festive break Guildford Girls U10s started the 2019 year with an away trip to Reigate to take part in a friendly festival.
Thankfully for those recovering from the Christmas relaxation it wasn’t too early a start and the team arrived full of cheer and keen to get back to matches and putting all their hard work in to practice.
We had three games and the key for the girls was to see if they could remember the lessons learned from the pre-Christmas tournament at Teddington and also to build on the hard work they had been putting in as both individuals and playing as team over the last few months.
To say the coaches were impressed would be an understatement! Before the matches started we asked the girls to focus on three things: think fast and be switched on from the first whistle, keep the structure and think of your role in the team as opposed to yourself, play hard and compete for each ball and for each other.
It was brilliant to see them do this from the off and continue to do it all the way through each match.
Overall we won 2 vs Reigate and Horsham and lost one game vs East Grinstead.
The first game we won 4-0 and Fire showed their dominance from the first whistle, moving the ball round well, competing and winning most 50:50s and scoring through Emily and Martha. Great performance to open the 2019 year and set us on out winning way.
The second game we won 1-0. What we really liked about this game was that while we were on top and controlling the game, we didn’t panic when the goal didn’t come and stuck to the job confident we would score if we kept playing the right hockey. And we did! Great attacking play by Emily, Emilia and great linking and passing by Martha, Sophie and Issy in the midfield.
The last game we lost 0-1 but it was a brilliant game to watch and while we always like to win, being part of a great game and coming out second is also fun and we can sometimes learn more from these games. The girls played really well and it could have gone either way with chances for us in the opening 5 minutes and then a sustained period of pressure from EG leading to a goal. Great to see or defenders Issy and Bibi getting really involved in this game and also our star goalkeeper Beth being called in to action too!
Overall great to be back on a pitch, to see the girls responding so well to the coaching on Fridays and Sundays and then being keen to take on board lessons learned to improve further.
Onwards and upwards as Guildford Fire start to ignite the hockey scene ......
