Gondos Dig In Against Top of Table

 8th Dec 2018

20180916-GondoliersOn a wet and windy evening in Woking, the Gondoliers took to the pitch against top of the table Woking Pitts knowing that we were in for a tough match.

And so it proved.

The first half was controlled by a strong Woking side which dominated possession and won numerous short corners. Eales pulled off save after save keeping us in the match and gave us belief that we could get something out the game.

The Gondo’s were relying heavily on good defence but the attacking trio of Gould, Kuhle and Sturgess provided occasional respite and a real threat on the break.

Not long before half time the Gondo’s won a short corner and our short corner routine has become quite deadly in recent weeks. Mullins to Kuhle and a firm strike inside the left post 1 – 0.

Half time arrived and we were fortunate to be ahead,  but had fought hard and clearly rattled the opposition.

Woking continued to play good hockey and the Gondo’s survived a number of good attacks before taking a 2-0 lead through another Kuhle goal. Mullins the provider again walking the ball (he may claim to have been running) from the half way line to the top of the D where he nutmegged the Woking defender before slipping the ball to Kuhle who couldn’t miss from 5 yards.

Kuhle had an opportuniity to put the game to bed a short time later but fired the ball just wide of the goal claiming the goalie put him off! (jug avoidance?)

Perhaps the 2-0 lead led to the Gondo’s dropping off, perhaps we were just tiring, but Woking found renewed energy and found their way back into the game with a smartly taken goal from open play. Shortly afterwards they won a short corner and had finally worked out that they needed to go around the goalie rather than through him. 2-2.

Kuhle was clearly tired at this stage and asked the umpire if he could leave the pitch for a few minutes rest, the umpire obliged.

With 10 minutes to go the Gondo’s dug in and defended; a hard fought 2-2 draw was a good result against a very good Woking side.

Many thanks to Geoff for umpiring a game that has always had  the hallmarks of a local derby with both side always determined not to lose.
