Men's 1s Patient Plater Inspires Guildford Win

 8th Dec 2018

20181013-M1sTeamThe halfway point of the South Prem 2 league season has arrived and the Guildford Men’s 1st XI go into the break unbeaten, a point clear of their South Coast rivals, Trojans HC.

The last game before the break against league contenders Wycombe HC was a super contest, with the opening 35 minutes proving to be tough for the home team, who played into the howling wind at Broadwater School. We created one half-chance through some excellent skill from Michael Dorgan, whose reverse stick effort skimmed over the cross bar. A minute before the break, Wycombe converted from close range following some excellent build up play.

However, the Men’s 1s have been ruthless in the second half on a number of occasions this season, and this was no exception. We came out of the blocks firing, with full pressure placed on the Wycombe defenders and countless positive turnovers won by the energetic Elliot Sanderson. The team's clear mental and physical fitness is the result of much hard work put in on a regular basis, starting in pre-season with excellent conditioning sessions run by Steve Walsh, and continuing through to game 11.

Charterhouse School had broken up for the Christmas break, and this was evident in the performance of staff member, Sam Plater, who scored a brace for GHC in the second half. Goal number two was quite possibly the cleanest strike of a ball (on target) that has ever been witnessed at fortress Broadwater. Contender for goal of the season? Tylo Remke added the third with a neat reverse stick finish.

It was a very satisfying first half of the season for all GHC teams represented in both the Men's and Ladies leagues. Several teams are on top if not within reach of taking the lead in their respective leagues. That said, let’s not be caught dwelling on how far we’ve come and instead start again with renewed energy, enthusiasm and humility after Christmas.

I would like to wish everyone in the GHC community a very Merry Christmas.
