Gondoliers Earn Tough Draw v South Berks Youngsters

 24th Nov 2018

20180916-GondoliersMany thanks to Geoff for the match report this week - the two duty managers (Nigel and Steve in case you didn’t know!) are still trying to work out who to blame for not winning.

Uncertainty reined as we arrived at Bracknell for the match against South Berks on a cold, damp afternoon. How many players would we have?

Nigel thought 14, but Andy Roberts was doubtful.

Then Steve Windsor-Lewis phoned to say that his car had broken down.

So we were down to 12.

Meanwhile South Berks had augmented their numbers with a group of (to us) youngsters in their late thirties and early forties!

So we took to the field with our three in midfield equalling the four marshalled against them in total age! This was going to be a hard match.

South Berks started stronger with their right midfield in particular galloping forwards to support their attack at every opportunity.

They scored, Nick Kuhle replied from a short corner, they scored again and Mark Howells equalised. Meanwhile Steve had arrived to bolster our numbers.

At half time we reorganised our midfield with Mark Howells joining Toby Mullins and Steve Windsor Lewis to counteract the mob of youngsters. This worked and the Gondoliers launched several attacks, producing a few penalty corners.

From two of these, Nick Kuhle fired unstoppable shots in at the right post to complete his hattrick. However, South Berks hit back with two fast breaks of their own, leaving the score at 4 - 4 at the end.

We claimed a moral victory and were disappointed not to have an actual one. When we went up to the bar the older members of the opposition greeted us, but the youngsters had all left.  Presumably it was past their bedtime!

This report would not be complete without congratulating Toby Mullins, our centre midfield. Despite, on his own, constantly being opposed by two much younger central midfield players, he managed to launch several attacks and break down many of theirs - a star performance.
