BU16s Draw at London Wayfarers

 18th Nov 2018

Thank you to the boys and parents who braved the South Circular on Sunday for the Tier 1 match vs Wayfarer's at Dulwich College. Final score 2-2...

A strong team warmed up well and looked focused and keen to put past results behind them, whilst playing the hockey we’ve talked about.

The game was good overall, with the new defence pairing in the middle, Luca and James, being strong on the ball and moving the ball fast. These basic skills allowed the rest of the team to have more time on the ball and moved the ball fast down the channels.

Early passes gave the midfield a lot to work with and with the strong running of Chan and Ben R upfront, we looked a solid unit. Half time saw us at 1:0.

It could have been a better score line for us, except for some exceptional goalkeeping from the opposition keeper. When we moved the ball at short corners we created chances.

The obvious challenge was to keep attacking in the 2nd half and keep moving the ball rather than get caught dribbling. Sadly, early pressure from Wayfarers in the 2nd half resulted in 1 or 2 poor passes and rushed decisions; these choices allowed Wayfarers to get a deserved equaliser. To the boys credit, this then sparked the Guildford team to move to a higher tempo and play with more passion over the pitch .

To win tight hockey games we need to continue the basics and not revert to poor habits; a quick succession of short quick passes, followed by a long pass from Nic L finding Chan with space and time to trouble the defence. In the tight space of the D, Ben found the back of the net for 2-1 to us.

Often in sport, you are most vulnerable just after you’ve have scored - and once again Wayfarers' pressure got them back on level terms.

Man of the Match: Ben G - Loads of Stunning saves in goal

Great Debut from Luca!
