The Under 12 Girls had two matches this weekend. See how the Shadows and Lightning fared against the Wayfarers and Reigate...
Shadows v London Wayfarers B
7 a side league
This was the team’s second league game of the season and it looked set to be a tough one against an older Wayfarers side. That’s exactly what it was!!
With much better playing conditions this week, a mild dry autumnal day, the scene was set for a great game. Despite Wayfarers age advantage is was Guildford who took the initiative in the first quarter. Controlling the play and possession through Gemma and Amelie in Midfield with Olivia and Jemima solid in defence. Some great running and skills from Caitlyn, Annabelle, Katie and Evie up front saw a number of chances and short corners created. Despite all the pressure, the Wayfarers defence and goalkeeper thwarted our attacks and any shots on goal.
The second quarter was more evenly balanced with the opposition starting to put together some good passing moves and some skilful play by their forwards. When they did break through the Shadows defence Grace was supreme in goal, making a number of great saves as well as controlling the circle with confidence. The girls continued to run hard for each other and despite creating some good opportunities the half finished 0-0.
After a well-earned rest at half time the girls came out fighting in the third quarter. Beth moved up into midfield and joined Gemma, both showing determination in their tackling and some lovely skills to move the ball onto the forwards. Amelie, Katie and Annabelle put together some fabulous passing moves which were unfortunate not to result in a goal. At no point did the team stop running for each other and it was from this work rate they broke down a Wayfarers clearance resulting in Katie sweeping the ball into the bottom corner following a couple of great passes.
With tiring legs the team took a 1-0 led into the final quarter. Some high running by the Wayfarers forwards meant the game became stretched, creating goal opportunities at both ends. The midfielders now found it tough to cover the pitch with the ball being moved fast. Through their determination it was however Guildford who extended their lead, some good movement and passing through Annabelle and Beth allowed Caitlyn and Katie to simultaneously fire the ball low into the goal. Not sure who got the last touch but 2-0 Shadows!
Grace was called into action a number of times in the final 10 minutes, keeping the Wayfarer forwards at bay with some great saves. However, with five minutes left on the clock, a pass found a ‘high’ Wayfarers forward giving the defence or Grace little opportunity to stop the resulting sweep shot, 2-1. The last moments of the game were a little frantic but through a great team spirit the girls finished 2-1 winners.

Lightning v Reigate
P4 W1 D1 L2
Playing against 2 stronger and more organised Reigate teams (who looked to have played together more regularly) we saw the team lose both opening matches 3:0 and 2:1 before a good 2:0 win against Guildford. Lottie stood out with goals and attacking drive, gold star this week. Special mentions also to: Alexandra as captain and in attack, Lucy in defence (supported ably by Issey and Clara) and a really good goal from Scarlett in her 'favoured' attack position.
In the 3rd/4th playoff we drew 1:1 for a fair result against Hurricane. The team worked really hard for one another and as the morning progressed, we saw much better communication and cohesion in their defence and attack plan. With so many of the girls playing in a range of positions / out of their normal position, it gave the coaching team a chance to see some skills gaps and stand out performances we can work on in training. Overall this group has the makings of a good side with some more hard work.
