The best is yet to come...
Guildford Hockey Club Men’s First XI team have moved to top of their league table (South Prem 2) after the first four games of the season. However, now is not the time to dwell on this early success, especially considering that all those in the squad, along with their supporters, would agree that the team was far from their best on Saturday, despite securing another 3-2 win over London Academicals.
The weather could not have been better for a late October afternoon at Broadwater School, the home of Guildford Hockey Club. As the crowd started to swell in the Autumn sunshine, the Men’s First XI got a shaky first half under way and were relatively fortunate to go ahead just before the break, following a neat finish from last season’s top goal scorer, Ross Ferguson.
Stern words from the coach and players at half time ignited a better start to the second half. The Men turned things around to dominate proceedings for the next 20 minutes, with fluid build up play coupled with a few well-timed counter attacks leading to a number of chances, which were probably easier to score than to miss! This time around, however, the goal keeper had on some golden pads, on another day, the 1’s could have (should have?) gone five or six up.
All the pressure the men exerted on their opponents did result in two penalty corners, which Ross Ferguson clinically put away for the perfect hat-trick.
A 3-0 win would have kept everyone happy considering the poor start to the game, but instead, the proverbial ‘foot off the peddle’ ensued, with cards being given out, two scrappy goals for the visitors and a slightly tense end to the game.
The Men will be very happy with the knowledge that they are able to win when the performance is not where it should be and are determined to continue to improve each week.
The Men’s squad are extremely grateful for all the support they received on the sideline on Saturday.
Congratulations to the following who made their first appearances for the season
