The Under 14s started their England Hockey Tier 2 Championship campaign with a solid win over Blackheath & Elthamians. A terrific team effort that resulted in a double digit number of goals scored for GHC...

10–0 Win (Gibbo 3, Henry 3, Frank 2, Gouldie 2)
The pre-match team talk revolved around the boys suggesting we usually took the first quarter to get going. So today we said we needed to come out of the starting gate firing on all cylinders with a key focus on:
- Early Passing
- Positional play
- Taking free hits early.
The half time team talk revolved around agreeing that we had done exactly that!
Right from the whistle the positional play was excellent the choice of pass was good but needed to be firmer. The strength of pass came in the 2nd Qtr and remained throughout the match and became our strongest weapon. Several of our goals came from textbook hockey, starting from deep in our defence, the ball being passed firmly and accurately up the pitch and ending with a goal (one such example was Barney’s clearance out to Toby in left mid on the side line, his pass to Henry in the middle, who then passed to Gibbo who took the ball into the D and scored) - Brilliant not only for the speed of passing but also for positional play and awareness of team mates prior to the pass being made).
Defensively Ehsan and Dan whilst having relatively little to do, thanks to the strength of defence from Ollie, Barney, Joseph, Ben and James D, still had to make some critical saves in order to keep a clean sheet, Ehsan head butting the ball out of goal and Dan having to keep out 3 attackers on his own making multiple saves until backup arrived in the form of James Dar who cleared a certain goal off the line.
When we were in attack there were a few superb examples of the PRESS when the opposition were trying to take 16yds hits. Also in attack the boys were unselfish in the D, if there was a good pass which gave a better goal scoring opportunity then the pass was made eg the excellent weighted pass from James R to Gouldie who scored and another when Frank put in a great pass to Gibbo who also scored.
Also impressive this afternoon were those boys who played in multiple different positions throughout the afternoon and the ability for rolling on and off the pitch remaining focused - both very important skills required in modern hockey.
This emphatic win was down to TOTAL TEAM hockey.
Order of goals:
1st Half: Gibbo, Henry, Henry, Gibbo
2nd Half: Gouldie, Henry, Gibbo, Frank, Frank, Gouldie
Congratulations, Boys - a joy to coach, well worth the 2 jugs of coke!
