What a difference a week makes! With rain lashing down, barely a full side and only half the team doing a warm up, anybody would have thought that this wasn’t going to be the Shadows week. However, they would have been wrong!
Straight from the start the Shadows were focused and took control of the game. In quick succession we put two goals beyond Merton and looked in a commanding position to take control over the rest of the match. But then a bad pass at the back gave Merton the opportunity they were looking for to be able to challenge our lead. They took that opportunity and brought the score to 2-1.
The Shadows, still in the lead, kept composure and used switches around the back to disorientate their opponents and drive the score board up to 3-1 at half time.
With complacency looming in the Shadows' air and Merton keen not to let their first match of the season be a whitewash, the Shadows were at risk of losing the second half. However, the Shadows remained disciplined in their attacking approach and continued to move balls around the back (even to the keeper at one stage - whoops) and as a result managed to put a further 3 goals beyond Merton.
In the second half Merton did have several short corner attempts but with a save off the line by Dave, they weren’t able to convert any of them.
A good result for a team that played well together. Final score: 6-1 to the Shadows. Scorers: Martin, Tom, Jordan, Ed, Harry (x2)
