Three Guildford Under 10 Girls teams travelled to Surbiton on Sunday to play in their first competitive matches of the season. A solid start to the season and smiles all round...
Guildford Lighting U10's Match report away to Surbiton: W2, D2, L1.
We all arrived to be met by a beautiful but cool September morning at Surbiton Hockey club, the first matches of the season ahead of us.
The Guildford Lightening team warmed up with some passing, shooting and discussion about space awareness, working for the team and enjoying every aspect of the morning's hockey.
We got off to a great start in the first game with the girls playing hard and fighting for every ball, resulting in Jasmine scoring the first goal of the season from some beautiful passing around the goal, this was soon added to by Isobel who skilfully backed her own ability through the defence; 2-0 and the girls were excited to get to game two.
In the second game we forgot to mark the opposition and quickly they scored, for a short time Guildford lost control of the game resulting in a second goal, resulting in a loss 0-2. Game three and four were hard fought with some wonderful defensive work from Beth, Caitlin and Elsa both resulting in draws 0-0 and 0-0.
The fifth and final game was against our friends, Guildford Hurricane, I'm not sure I have seen the girls more determined and they quickly got to work passing to each other, and tackling the opposition; who equally were determined not to be outdone. After a great game Lighting were rewarded as the midfield of Grace and Hannah engineered a passage of play resulting in Grace driving the ball into the back board, 1-0 and the victory was theirs.
Thanks to all the parents for making the journey and supporting the girls, who should be very proud of how they played and conducted themselves on and off the pitch; thanks and see you all on Friday!

First match of the season got to a good start. The girls won two matches, lost two and drew one. Great performance overall and a very positive attitude from the team. Some great goals scored which was a clear result of some fantastic team work.
The girls understood their positions and I was happy to see they put in practice what we worked on training. Izzy was fantastic in defence and having suffered from two bad injuries she carried on with a great attitude! Same for Sophie who run non stop despite an early injury, she kept on trying to create opportunities along side speedy Elsa and determined Niamh. Caitlin was a solid defence working hard at the back while Isabelle and Martha run along the sides pressing on the opposition. I can’t wait to see how everyone progresses over the season but for now this was a great start of the season for Storm!

What an excellent start to the season for Guildford Fire, unbeaten at Surbiton over 6 matches, seriously well done girls! We won 3 and drew 3. 4 good goals by Emilia plus 2 from Emily, and a few nail biting finishes! Everyone got stuck in, gave it 100%, with some excellent linking play from Martha. A few things to work on like: more accurate passing, getting the ball under control first time, and dribbling out of trouble. Exciting times. See you Friday.
