A number of Guildford girls joined players from Aldershot and Farnham, Woking, Staines and Ashford to form a team that took part in a summer tournament which had representative teams from England and USA. In total there were 10 teams and the event took place during the first weekend of the Hockey World Cup.
The team, run by Shay O’Connell and Andrew Fergusson had a tough start on day one. A combination of very hot weather and playing all the pool games with 10 players proved a challenge. However, at the end of the first day we were the only unbeaten team!!!
The first day was rounded off by all the players and coaches travelling to Lee Valley to watch the evening games at the World cup. A great evening was had by all.
Day two came around very quickly as we had got stuck on the motorway the night before, so with little sleep we took on the knock out stages. Our quarter final was against a Surbiton team that we beat on shuffles!!! We then won our semi final and there we were in the final. Surbiton, who were hosting the final, had a second team whom we played. We had again found ourselves with only ten players. Exhaustion had crept in and unfortunately we just did not have enough in the tank and we lost a close final.
It was a great experience for the girls to play with different team mates and a particular well done goes to u16s, Issie and Esta who really raised their games. Alice, Alice and Hannah W showed their maturity and experience from playing Ladies 1’s and showed the way to the others.
