Saturday 12 May Guildford HC hosted the Wessex Masters League Finals. This was supposed to have been in March but the mini-beast from the East had other other ideas including frost so on a nice May day, 10 teams, with 130 players and numerous supporters descended on GHC for the big tournament...
The 10 teams were grouped into a 4 team League Cup, a 4 team Over 50s Cup and a Vase final.
The Pilgrims' first challenge in the League Cup were Newbury and Thatcham. The first goal came in the 2nd half, being a cheeky poach at the left post by Mark Lenel. A 2:1 win was secured with a delightful lob over a sliding keeper by Steve Gilliver.
Our final opponents were Petersfield who were undefeated in over 3 seasons in the Wessex Masters league and cup competitions.
Guildford stuck to the game plan and it was 0:0 at half time. This lead to a dominant 25 minute second half, the only goal being a penalty flick, won after a driving run by Feko Spits resulted on a shot being stopped by a foot on the line.
Mark Lenel stepped up, slotted the ball top left corner.
Guildford then controlled the game with Petersfield breaking occasionally with one real chance for them in the 2nd half.
The side was captained for the weekend by Ferko Spits, in his final games for the team, as he and his family head back to Netherlands.
His presence and contribution to our side over the last two year have been substantial, THANK YOU Ferko and best wishes on your move. Keep in touch!
MOM was Sam Hansen, outstanding at sweeper.
Our exceptional day for the team was topped off by wining the Team of the Year for the Men's section at the GHC End of Season Dinner and Awards that same evening.
And finally Pilgrims player of the year, our keeper Brett Smith, our outstanding last line of defence!
Well done to all and looking forward to next season already...
