With not a cloud in the sky and temperatures rising fast, Guildford Fire commenced their fight to win the Canterbury U10 Girls tournament - my, what a performance they put on!
It was a fantastic team performance which they should all be very proud of, they fought long and hard and although they came up against some very good competition they were just too strong.
- Our first game was against Epsom, we were slightly slow to get going but our solid control of the ball led to a 3-0 win.
- Our second game was against The Panthers - the girls were eager to get going and played an outstanding game of hockey winning 5-0.
- After a 12 minute rest Ashford were our next opposition and we won 4-0.
- This was followed very quickly by Sevenoaks which we won 6-0.
Our defence was solid in every game, our wings were excellent at driving the ball down the wings, our midfielders excelled at strong accurate passing and changing the direction of play and our shots at goal were fast and furious and although we put many a goal keepers to work we were relentless at with the rebound until a goal was scored. Grace defended any strike at goal with great skill. The short corners, of which we had many, were text book with the majority leading to a goal!
Four games in and with the sun beating down on our heads the girls were beginning to get tired. The promise of a Mr Whippy for them all if they did not concede a goal seemed to liven spirits which was very important as our next opposition was our great competitors London Wayfarers.
The girls rallied and Isla scored an incredible flick goal which resulting in us winning the match 1-0. As winners of our table we were now set to play the winners of the other table Wimbledon, who had won the tournament last year. The Mr Whippy promise was still working wonders and the girls stepped onto the field and fought hard to win the match 2-0.
Outstanding is really the only word for it !
