Ladies 1s Go 6 Points Clear at Top Despite Snow

20171118-L1sTeamTop of the table thriller in the snow sees the Ladies 1s go 6 points clear at the top of their League...

Saturday saw the Ladies 1s travelling up the A3 to Battersea Park for an early pushback against second placed Wanderers, the only team in the league that we had not beaten.

The weather, to say the least was not favourable for a game to take place and on arrival the snow was being blown sideways and the pitch was slushy, BUT both sides were really up for playing and it would have taken a lot to have called off the game. A favourable result for either team would make them favourite for winning the league, with only one team guaranteed promotion.

From the start both teams played attacking hockey, but soon we were frustrating Wanderers with our press, which most teams have found difficult to breakthrough this season. Mid-way through the first half after an attack from Wanderers ended in Guildford being awarded a free hit just outside our 22. Niamh took this quickly and laid on a pass to Anja who took the ball from the halfway line around the defence, into the D and Kerry scored to give Guildford the lead.

This lasted just 5 minutes as Wanderers were awarded a number of short corners and their pressure was rewarded to bring the score level. On the point of half time following another short corner, the shot hit Libby and a P Flick was awarded to Wanderers. Goalkeeper Alice mastered the mind game and that small battle was won with the resultant flick going wide.

Going into the second half it was all to play for and Guildford had the better of the early part of the half with a lot of possession and a lot of work around the D resulting in a series of short corners. We were successful in scoring from one of these to take a 2-1 lead.

Wanderers fought hard for the remainder of the game, but our defence held strong and with the whole team working hard for the entire game we were victorious. This leaves Guildford 6 points clear at the top of the league with 2 games to play.

We face Horahsm on Thursday (previously postponed for frost/cold) and then Eastbourne on Saturday. A point from either of these matches will keep us in top spot with guaranteed promotion.
