On Sunday 11th March, the Guildford Under 10 Boys travelled to Woking to play in the Surrey Cup. Expectations were high having won the recent Teddington Xmas invitational tournament (in January), and the boys were keen to show what they can do. Mother’s Day was cruelly cut short for many Mum’s as the team focussed on the business at hand…….
Guildford had the tougher group and played beautiful, controlled hockey in all four games, winning each game comfortably and not conceding a goal.
As top qualifiers in their group they played the hosts, Woking, in the Semi Final. This was a really tough game against a very talented and well organised team.
The scores were level after normal time leading to five extra minutes of golden goal.
Still level the game moved to penalty flicks...it wasn’t until the 8th flick that the sides were separated and Guildford won through - well done to the courageous penalty flicks takers Toby, Alex and Matt plus Seb who made several fantastic saves in goal.
The Final was against Wimbledon, a team we had played and beaten in the group game. At this stage of the tournament nerves and fatigue were kicking in, and that was just the parents!!
The boys played their hearts out in a tight contest against a strong Wimbledon team winning the Surrey Cup and their place in the Regionals with a determined 1-0 victory.
The team is blessed with 9 fantastic players, so well done to Seb (GK), Fraser, Ralph, Matt, Toby, Henrik, Alex, Ollie and Sam. It was a brilliant effort, playing with great style and a very well deserved tournament victory. Quite amazingly the team has yet to concede a goal in both the Teddington tournament and Surrey Cup - well done!
