Ladies 4s - Another week, another win

 16th Nov 2013

Another week  and another win!

Only 11 players available this week and a fixture that can be tricky.  Match start time came and went as three of our players were stuck in the rugby traffic! we exercised our right to a short delay and then we were 9, another few minutes and we made it to 10 so had to start the game.

With no subs we put the fittest and fastest in the midfield - normally that would be all our younger members but Sarah S qualifies in her own right! ably assisted by Caitlin on the right and Libby on the left. As Johanna had such a stormer of a game last week she earned the right to stay at right wing, Amie slotted into centre forward and Maggs ambled about on the left wing. Ellie Katy and Briege sorted out the back line and we hoped Chelle would arrive to add to the defence (and she arrived shortly after!).

Initially we were under pressure and it looked like we would have to bolster our defence but then a few good passing moves found us in the Richmond D and our confidence grew. The umpire was reluctant to award short corners so we were constantly being told we had the advantage when the defence fouled! Eventually we had a chance to score and Maggs managed to hit the inside of the post and watch the ball ricochet over the sideline! Shortly after Sarah S cleaned up from a goal mouth clearance and we went to half time 1:0 By then the pattern of the game was established and we were clearly the stronger team.

The plan for the second half was 'more of the same' - keep the ball speed up, pass early, and move the ball away from the central defender who was their best player (later she was their man of the match). A short way into the half Maggs had the opportunity to slot the ball home as the keeper rushed out to clatter her! Both ended up flattened but the ball was in the goal - some of the Richmond defenders thought it shouldn't be a goal but were sadly mistaken!

Katy needed a run up front to warm up so came forward (as did most of the defence by now as they were getting cold!) and calmly bashed to ball past the keeper for our third and shortly after repeated this for our 4th. Somewhere in the second half we relaxed enough to let Richmond score a goal but the result was never in doubt.

Another great team performance - sadly Johanna or Amie didn't manage to score today but it wasn't for lack of trying! We did pepper the Richmond goalie with shots but today we were hustled off the ball in the D by their strong defence. Caitlin and Libby blocked off most of the Richmond attacks on the wings leaving Ellie and Sarah to close down attacks through the centre. Ellie, Katy, Briege and Chelle provided the usual fortress defence we have come to expect which gives the rest of us huge confidence to push forward with our attacking play.

Second in the league (on goal difference only) but we still hold the best defensive record. Keep winning and we will overhaul Leatherhead.
