Very well done to the Under 12 Boys B team who scored 16 goals and let in none on Sunday but were pipped at the post for the Plate, earning silver in the shoot-out...
It's a strange feeling to win 6 matches, draw one, with a goal difference of 16 for, 0 against and then still walk away with 'only' silver.... a confirmation that the best team does not always win!
After cruising through the pool stages (4-0, 5-0, 2-0 and 1-0) we were positioned well for the knockout stage. The quarter-final had us up against Old Cranleighans, whom we beat fairly comfortable 2-0 (again George keeping a clean sheet...).
Our semi-final was against Wimbledon. They proved to be a much tougher side, with strong individuals skills and great organisation. However, we proved too much and with an strong team push in the dying seconds of the game Rafe managed to score to get us into the Finals.
Old Kings was the other side making it into the final, after beating Surbiton on penalty strokes. Although we had beaten them comfortably in the pool stages, the final proved to be different. They defended like lions, and we were not able to score from the many chances we created.... 0-0 was the final score and penalty strokes had to decide who took home the Plate ....
We missed 2 from 3. They scored 2 and so it was Silver for us. Couldn't have been closer and we can all be very proud of an amazing performance from the boys.
Strong defensive play came from Alexander, Finlay, Bertie and Noah and a clean sheet by George (and an amazing save on 1-0 to keep us ahead in the 2-0 pool game against Old Kings). Rafe and James were excellent in midfield and upfront Kyle, Felix and Wieger combined, scored and created chaos in our opponent's defense.
What I especially appreciated was the team spirit, with the boys all accepting that being subbed off was not because they were playing badly, but because this was a 10-man effort. Makes coaching these boys a lot of fun and very rewarding.
Thanks for everyone's support during the season, I know the boys really appreciated it!
