The mighty Under 16 Boys EH Cup team were in an essential game this weekend against Marlow. In a qualifying pool with four other teams, only the top two go through...
Wins against Amersham & Chalfont and Oxford Hawks earlier in the season gave us a good start but with a thrilling 4-4 draw with Reading, the group was evenly poised with Guildford and Reading equal on points and Marlow just behind them. A win for them on Sunday could put paid to our aspirations to make the regional finals.
Marlow have a strong side and in the league managed to beat us 2-0 so we knew it was a tough. The boys had managed a good rest at half term and it was a real challenge getting our best team out with half of Surrey on holiday and or skiing.
The team started brightly and had the majority of the possession and numerous chances. But the Marlow keeper played brilliantly and managed to keep out about 9 clear chances on goal. Marlow literally had 3 chances in the first half and managed to score 2 good goals. The first came on an overload in the midfield and a sharp shot went right in the corner to beat Ethan in goal. he second goal came from the Marlow left half literally running like a gazelle half the pitch and smashing the ball in, a great individual goal. So at half time after having all the ball we saw ourselves 2-0 down and had to regroup.
The boys stayed calm and we opted to change formation and went for 4 in midfield. This made an instant impact and Harry set Will T on the left who just missed out on a one on one with the goalie. Joel then set Charlie V on the right and also a shot went close. The boys kept passing the ball and Jake, Toby, Been R and Adam were rock solid at the back. The midfield started to dominate with Joel, Harry, Fergie and Firthy doing well and the chances started to come. A neat one-two pass between Will F and Harry then saw a shot from Will T which was saved and then multiple rebounds followed. Harry then smashed it in to start the comeback.
The boys kept pushing hard and Will T hit a reverse shot like a rocket across the face of the goal and Will F smartly deflected to make it 2-2!!! Game on! After a testing first half the momentum very much swung to Guildford and Will T then scored to make it 3-2. Jonny did well in a few positions and we kept rolling the bench to get fresh legs on. Chan added energy up front and James did well when he came on at right half.
All the boys worked super hard to defend in numbers and kept pressing to try and get the fourth goal. When the final whistle came the boys were super pleased to have won after being 2 goals down. The game saw us keep our shape and stay positive with the ball.
Very proud of the whole squad to have finished top of the group and to progress on to the next round.
