GU10 Lightning and Tornado Strike at Eastcote

 18th Feb 2018

20180218-GU10LightningWhile three Under 10 Girls teams battled it out with Sevenoaks teams at GHC, two additional teams travelled to Eastcost for some goal-scoring and Haribos...

On a coldish damp Sunday morning the force that is Guildford Lightning took to the Astro at Brunel University after a couple of stretches and warm up sprints and a short briefing on tactics.

Lightning v Pigs (1-0 win)

First opponents were Eastcote Pigs. The girls took a bit of time to find their shape but when they did Alexandra, BiBi, Emilia and Cammie worked well up the right creating a few good chances that we just couldn’t finish. Finally, though, with a few minutes left, Cammie put away a chance to deservedly give us the lead. A last gasp breakaway by the Pigs had some Lightening supporters’ hearts in their mouths but Charlotte confidently stopped the attack and cleared the ball to see the girls to a 1-0 win.

A break for us in the schedule allowed time for flapjacks and water as well as a few more words of encouragement and an open discussion on tactics. We resolved to enjoy ourselves.

Lightning v Hogs (3-0 win)

Next up were the Eastcote Hogs. Lightning quickly got in to the groove and produced an early chance for Issy who calmly finished on her debut. BiBi then managed to squeeze the ball through some goalmouth traffic to put us further ahead. Some excellent teamwork and interaction up the left between Alexandra and Hatty opened up the defence to allow Isla Montgomery to strike into the net. It finished 3-0 and could have been more.

Lightning v Tornado (2-0 win)

A quick turnaround saw us play Guildford Tornado next. With a few positional changes made it took us a while to get into our stride but some calm play from Emilia, Charlotte and Issy at the back saw some well-constructed length of the field moves. Cammie was the beneficiary of some lovely team play scoring 2 great goals and narrowly missing the hattrick. The game finished with a 2-0 victory and witnessed some tough battles with our fellow Friday night training mates.

Lightning v Boars (0-0)

Last up was Eastcote Boars who provided some stiff opposition for the Lightning whose bolts were not now flashing so brightly as energy levels waned. This was an end to end tussle of determination from our, now tired, girls. Isla ran around like a banshee and Alexandra directed proceedings as she had all morning but despite amazing efforts some chances we could not deliver the winning goal. Some epic defence from our back three kept a clean sheet and the game finished 0-0.

3 wins, a draw and lots of smiles was an excellent morning’s work and enough to see Lightning awarded the Haribos. WELL DONE GIRLS!!

Squad:  Emilia, Cammie, Hatty, Charlotte, Bibi, Alexandra King, Isla and Issy

Tornado drew their 1st game. The girls played really well in the 1st game, and were disappointed not to come away with a win. We were on the front foot for most of the match, and did really well passing out from the back to the wings before moving it forward. Charlotte & Mimi controlled everything from the middle of the pitch, and Emma made some great tackles to keep us solid at the back.

The 2nd game was against Eastcote’s best side, who put us under pressure from the start. We did a great job of breaking up the play and making tackle after tackle, giving up only 3 goals in the match.  Result:  3-0 to Eastcote.

Match 3 was against our rival, Guildford Lightning. It was obvious from the start that the girls were up for this one, and they gave every bit of energy they had against familiar faces. A great match actually, which I think ended 2-0 to Lightning. Isobel & Millie were all over the pitch in this one, breaking up play and combining to distribute the ball through the middle.

In match 4, the size of the pitch was starting to have an impact on energy levels. But, Scarlett and Alex worked really hard up front chasing down long passes from the back to keep us on the front foot. Result:  2-1 to Eastcote.

Team: Isabel, Alexandra, Scarlett, Millie, Charlotte, Emma and Mimi
