Guildford's promotion hopes were severely dented on Saturday with a heavy defeat at the hands of Banbury their promotion rivals. Before the game Guildford were optimistic as they had beaten their opponents at their place earlier in the Season.
Also on Saturday Guildford had what was on paper their strongest squad available including ex GB player Dan Fox who is Director of Junior Coaching at Guildford.
Guildford started brightly but failed to convert a couple of goal scoring opportunities. Banbury took control of the game playing good team hockey and scored three times before the interval. Guildford were lack lustre and too many players were not on their game.
In the second half Guildford had to push forward but left themselves open to counter attacks and Banbury scored three more times. Towards the end Josh Powell scored a consolation goal from a short corner.
A very disappointing result for Guildford and to have any chance of promotion we need to win our remaining five games and hope that one of the two teams above lose a couple of games.
Guildford 1 (Josh Powell) Banbury 6
