On a sunny spring morning GHC took on Surbiton at Reed's school...
Surbiton started the stronger and passed the ball around well but GHC slowly got a foothold in the game as they defended resolutely with Poppy making some good saves. And wow, out of nowhere GHC scored first with their first meaningful attack.
Surbiton had constructed a fine passing move that culminated in a cracking save from Poppy and like the other week GHC counter attacked quickly and with purpose. Some lovely approach play from Tabby and Georgia ended with a neatly taken reverse stick finish by Juliet. There was a renewed vigour to GHC and they finished the half with an emphatic finish by Georgia from a short corner as GHC flooded the D with the half time whistle ready to be blown.
2-0 up at half time was a good place to be for GHC and things got even better with the first action of the second half as Georgia doubled her personal tally with another finish direct from a short corner. The rest of the second half was a little nervy at times with Surbiton having the better chances only to be thwarted by Poppy several times and some resolute defending by both defence and a hard working midfield. GHC tried hard to add to their tally with some hard running but Surbiton defenders played well and protected their goalkeeper.
Overall a neutral would possibly say that the scoreline flattered GHC but this was a victory for hard work, battling and taking your chances when they come to you. The girls should be proud as they all had to work very hard today as they were short of numbers which left few substitution options. Keeping a cleansheet does not happen by accident or luck.
Well done girls!
