GU10 Fire and Storm at Teddington

 28th Jan 2018

20180128-GU10StormThe Under 10 Girls had four teams playing today including Fire and Storm who were at Teddington. We had a great series of games against very strong opposition.

GHC Fire

v Wimbledon (0-0 draw) – First game was against last years’ Surrey u10 winner Wimbledon.  A very competitive game with lots of chances to us who had the majority of the possession.  Solid defence from Jemima and Holly at the back and lots of running from Elixza at centre half and Martha R and Hannah down the flanks.  Poppy worked hard up front and was very close to finishing a few good chances.  Sadly we couldn’t quite get the goal and Wimbledon managed a few breaks at the end of the game.  Grace did well to save one final shot right at the end to give us a draw.  An ok start and lots of enthusiasm from the girls and a realisation we would have to take our chances against Woking.

v Woking (2-0 win) – the girls knew we had to pass the ball a bit wider and take our chances in this game to make the play offs.  Lots of hard work across the park and Martha and Isla did well in breaking down play and looking to get the ball wide.  Martha R went down the right and Poppy finished well and then the second goal came swiftly afterwards.  We had the majority of the ball and passed with faster ball speed.

v Canterbury (quarter final) (1-0 win) – after coming top of the group the girls then faced a decent Canterbury team and managed a 1-0 win and showed some great team work to defend like ninjas and attack down the flanks.  Poppy managed a good goal and lots of solid work across the defence and midfield to clear our lines and also to pass out wide to creat space for the wingers.  A very pleasing performance and on to the semi finals!!  The other Guildford team also topped their group and went on to face Reading in the semis.  Great to have 2 teams make it through to the semis ina  top competition.

v Surbiton (3-1 loss) – a very close game against a strong Surbiton team and a bit of a harsh score for the girls but lots to be happy about.  We sarted brightly and scored within the first 30 seconds.  Surbiton came back strongly and scored on the break and then we responded and forced a couple of great saves.  WE conceded 2 very harsh short corners that the Surbiton did well to hit into the goal a rare skill at u10 level.  Despite the loss the girls played well and with a  bit more discipline about keeping possession we will come back stronger.

Overall a super day at Teddington for a strong squad.  Now back to training to work on our passing, maintaining our shape and finishing strongly.

Well done to the girls and thanks for all the support from the parents and help on the day from people umpiring.

All the girls played extremely well, we started off strong beating Canterbury by 1, we held the ball most of the time and could have scored more. Moving on to Surbiton, who were very strong, the play was equal but they only had a few shots on goal, we couldn't get it passed their goalie. Wimbledon another strong team, gave us a run for our money but we got a goal in the last minute. Reading, a team that hacked at the ball with high sticks, so many calls that were not called. Even though they had no goalie our girls could not convert their shots to goals, we had so many shots but Reading kept it at bay.

I was so proud of our girls they played like terriers, subbing them every 3-4 minutes and receiving 150% effort most of the time. Our backs were steadfast and Amelie did well at relieving Gemma and Olivia when needed. Amelie played both mid and back and did her terrier tackles with fineness, she ran her socks off. Gemma was brilliant and played so hard, also ended up a few times up front using her killer ball skills and then passing when she had done enough. Olivia kept their forwards at bay with her constant defense skills, some amazing saves. Martha is a fast girl, her legs were always running as fast as she could and actually saved a goal as one opposition took off at one point with no defence to stop her, her play was very fluid. Ella did some fantastic runs and some great tackles getting out to the wings when needed, and also stopped a few runners! Evie had some lovely runs up the wing and popping them into the D, a couple of great rolls, also passing back to the mids who crossed it and opened the game, she just couldn't get the ball in the goal! Annabelle's ball skills are lovely to watch, some fantastic passing, runs with skills then passing, again she couldn't get it in the goal. Immy was our goal scorer, her tenacity was fabulous, she's fast and she has that wonderful slap into the goal...twice!

As for Charlotte, well she did an incredible job not conceding any goals, she was out of the goal scaring the opposition and keeping all shots out of our goal. Thank you for joining us Charlotte, you were an asset to the team.
