Congratulations to the Boys U12 team for winning the (postponed) Teddington Christmas Invitational. This tournament brings together twelve teams from across the South region and is a good warm-up and test for teams ahead of their important County Tournaments...
The Guildford boys played better and better as the day progressed (a challenge in itself with the cold sleet and heavy rain throughout the afternoon) - every individual gave their all and every individual contributed significantly to this great result.
Pool Game 1 v Wimbledon
We started off the first of 2 pool games against Wimbledon who played considerably better than they did a week earlier. Wimbledon took the early lead but our boys kept their composure and equalised and then took the lead. We learnt from this match the need to play wide.
Pool Game 1 v Sevenoaks
After a very long (1hrs) gap our next pool match was against Sevenoaks. Clearly re-motivating ourselves and coming out of the blocks fast was essential when playing 12 min one-way games. This game had very high standard hockey between both teams and was a 1-1 draw, a fair result.
Quarter-Final v Marlow
Into the knockout rounds, matches were now only 10mins one way, requiring even more urgency. Goal difference meant that we were runners up in our pool so our Quareter-final was against Marlow who had won their pool. This was not going to dishearten our boys, each match needs to be won and in hind sight this was probably our easiest match of the day (but it was by no means a walk over) such was the quality of all teams in the competition.
Semi-Final v Canterbury
This meant we were now into the semi finals and lined up against Canterbury. Colour clash required us to change our shirts (even that was not going to upset our team spirit). Again another tough match sealed with a 1-0 victory.
Final v Surbiton
Which brings us to the final and our oft and old adversaries, Surbiton. Team talk was simple, if you play as well as you have been playing all day you will win this match and if we happen to go down by a goal, don't panic play the same hockey you have been playing all day. Well there was one change to the team talk. We did go down one goal early but the boys did not play as they had all day - they raised their game to an even higher level, coming away with a 2-1 win having had opportunities for more as well!
Our route to winning was:
- Pool Game 1: GHC 2 - 1 Wimbledon
- Pool Game 2: GHC 1 - 1 Sevenoaks
- Quarter Final: GHC 2 - 1 Marlow
- Semi-Final: GHC 1 - 0 Canterbury
- Final: GHC 2 - 1 Surbiton
Thanks very much to the parents who came to support in atrocious weather conditions (arguably worse than pre-Christmas when the tournament was postponed because of the weather).
But most of all congratulations to all the boys,
