GU10 Tigers and Lions v Old Cranleighans

 14th Jan 2018

The2018-01-14-GU10satOCs Guildford Tigers and Lions played some good matches against Old Cranleighans on Sunday...

Guildford Tigers

The team started strongly and passed the ball against OCs A team and very quickly we went 2-0 up. Lots of good runs from Poppy up front and good linking midfield between Hannah, Martha R down the right and Rosie in midfield. Jemima and Holly very solid at the back and didn’t let a goal in all day and Grace was composed when she had to make a couple of saves. Elisa and Martha M also were prominent in midfield and various positions working very hard and trying to pass the ball. Overall we played 4 games and won 3 of them by 2/3 goals or more and drew our 2nd game 0-0.

Thanks to all the girls for their efforts and we will build on this performance at training and the next few weeks to improve our passing and composure on the ball.

Guildford Lions

I had the lovely B team on Sunday, and they were full of enthusiasm from the first whistle. We didn’t have a goalie, so three girls had to play in defence, and only Olivia was keen to do this. However, they all took a turn at the back, and didn’t moan (too much!) about it. We won all our games, and didn’t concede a single goal, which is a fantastic achievement without a keeper. Scoring goals was more complicated than usual, in the absence of a D, and with a shooting area which was much smaller than they were used to. The girls had to work out how to pass the ball into the net, rather than slapping it in from distance.

I tried to encourage the girls to move the ball wide and high early, and then to get it to our high forward on the Penalty spot. By the end, we were doing this really well, and Isla was particularly good at spotting a ball out wide nice and early. One thing to work on is getting our defensive wall set up early and effectively when the other team have a 16 or free hit, and I was trying to get the defenders to tell their midfield and forwards where to stand.

All the girls were great!  We were just disappointed not to get a chance to take on the As on the day!
