Overall a great experience for the Girls U14 team at the London 2012 legacy venue the Copperbox with a lot learnt by the girls in their first competitive indoor event. The standard of play was good and with plenty of close results and a young (mainly u13), mixed ability team competed well and will be back next year for another test.
Indoor was new to most of the girls and the sessions run by the coaches before the tournament were great fun and all that attended learned the basics of the game. No doubt in years to come the girls will develop further and improve their indoor skills and gain more experience
Overall we played 6 games in a very long day at the Olympic Park and managed to lose 5 and draw one game but many of the results were close and the girls worked super hard for Shay as the coach and were positive throughout.
The Epsom game was super close but we couldn’t quite score after several close chances. Against Surbiton we started brightly and went close to leading in the first 2 mins but they eventually were too strong and won convincingly. They were the eventual champions and beat all the sides.
Stourport, Hertford and Braintree were all very close games with narrow losses but Shay rotated all the girls to get experience and every game we improved. Gradually we improved the passing and used the boards better down the right hand side of the pitch.
The final game saw us play Chelmsford and we had the majority of the ball but couldn’t quite finish against a decent keeper.
All in all a great day for the girls who have all had a good taste of indoor hockey and seemed to love it. Next year we look forward to going back a year older and stronger side to compete again.
Many, many thanks to GHC Ladies 1st team coach Shay O'Connell for all his positive coaching, to the parents for getting the kids to the Olympic Park and to the girls for all their enthusiasm and hard work.
