Doing our Club duty and assembling at the water based pitch supporting our First Team, the Gondoliers were apprehensive...what side would Oxford bring?
The familiar faces, Henman Senior, Sturgess’s wrap around body double, yes we were in for a good game. We had a full team and Richard Gordon returning from Fork Handles as a willing sub, which due to the Mowat hamstring was to everyone’s benefit.
We had a goal keeper and very good one he was too, thank you. We also had good support from Tim, Haslemere Brett, but not Nigel Gray who sloped off after the First’s game was finished.
The exchanges were even throughout the match with each side creating a number of chances. Good hockey was played and enjoyed. Both Goalkeepers played excellently, but they scored three, we hit the post twice.
The difference was three moments, yes just three little moments. Those moments that happen during a game, which upon reflection are three moments that maybe should not have happened, but they did happen. These moments cannot change because they have happened; they are now recorded in the annals of time and space of Gondolier history.
- The injured player unable to pick up the Oxford half back running through unmarked to cross for centre to score.
- At the short corner, the player on the far post coming off the line leaving it unprotected.
- The marker of the 70plus right winger leaving them unmarked at the top of the circle producing a deflected shot.
As the Greeks say
Well done team.
