GHC Ladies 1st XI scored four goals for the second week in a row, this time to win at Wimbledon...
On 29 September, the Ladies 1s played their first away game of the season against Wimbledon 2s at the Kings College Astro.
The team arrived in good time and met in the changing room for the pre match talk. It's possible that one could wonder how on earth we were going to get a result as a few minutes into his talk our Captain exclaimed "I need to ring my husband to get him to bring my stick!". Followed by a moment when, after 20 minutes of strategy talk from the coach, a player finally felt the need to ask about which direction were we going on the whiteboard. Onto the hockey...
The first half started with Guildford attacking well, but Wimbledon were able to counter attack and the first twenty minutes were end to end play with neither side really settling into a rhythm. After that Guildford did start to settle and our passing got stronger, but neither team really worried the goal keepers. The only real chance of the half fell to Wimbledon who broke after a Guildford mistake, but our defence got back forcing the Wimbledon forward out of the D and to safety. The half remained 0-0.
Guildford came out in the second half a lot stronger and 4 minutes into the half Hannah, (miraculously given the team talk incident) received the ball on the halfway line, rolled out around 3 Wimbledon players and drove up the line, passed to Niamh, who in turn drove the ball into the D for Kerry to finish, giving Guildford the lead. This led to growing confidence and Guildford started to take more control. Ten minutes later, Anja had the ball in the D and passed to Hetti; the attempt was saved by the keeper, but Kerry pounced on the rebound to score her second goal.
Guildford were now firmly in control and on the 30 minute mark another attack saw Anja in the D and she found the foot of a Wimbledon defender. From the resulting Penalty Corner, JJ found the back of the net. Then to round the game off Heather found herself with the ball on the halfway line and un opposed drive into the D and with a 1 on 1 with the keeper put the ball in the top right hand corner. Final score 4-0 to Guildford.
Hannah had a great game and was awarded man of the match. There was no real surprise as to the award for DOD, Libby had to don the cockerel outfit for her forgetting her stick!!!!
Guildford are at home this weekend against Southampton on Saturday, push back is at 13:30, why not come and cheer them on?
