Men's 3s Win v Old Reigatians

 25th Feb 2017

A new look Men's 3s travelled to Old Reigatians and brought home 3 points with a 2-1 win...

The 3rds has just about completed its transformation into a mainstream adults team, having found its former role as a dedicated youth development team unsustainable due to the school hockey season.

So a very different team of 12 turned up early at Reigate we had a good half hour to get ourselves warmed up and organised.

An unusual 2-5-3 formation was decided upon which put a lot of pressure on our outer halves that had a dual defensive and attacking role and left strength in the midfield.

The half time score line of only 0-1 against us was a testament to our team spirit and strong defence led by Rich with the greying locks of Simon and David T – and several good goal saves by Luke O.

We rarely had much attack going – and decided at half time to focus on getting us round the back and around their backs who were agreed to be their weak link.

The onslaught continued in the second half with strong play from their halves and forwards and boxing us in from 16s – and the pressure produced some silly mistakes from Dave T (earning him the rare prize of DoD). Luke O played out of his skin and earned a clear MoM.  Ollie Jones also received two nominations and a nomination each for Simon, Connor, Ian and Rich.

Ollie J’s hard work was rewarded with a break-away goal which lifted our spirits to 1-1 and we kept going – and in the last 5 minutes it was clear we were in with a chance to snatch a victory.  A fine cross from Connor to Graham provided the winning goal in the last 2 minutes.

So the 3rds are reinvented and coming together with a strong core of players in the 18-35 age group.  Please let or know if you want to find out more about playing with the 3rd XI.
