After last week’s win against an until then unbeaten Surbiton, Guildford Ladies 1s were in action this weekend at the league's only other as yet unbeaten side, East Grinstead. Buoyed by their previous victory they were full of confidence and looking forward to the game.
The game commenced at a fast pace and the East Grinstead forwards were very quick to break. But Alice L and Heather continually hampered their progress, supported well by the defenders. Guildford settled into the game and created opportunities of their own. However, after 12 minutes the home side exploited one attack, Guildford’s defenders were caught out and EG scored to take a 1-0 lead.
Guildford fought back hard and the play was very evenly balanced with both teams attacking and defending well. Shortly before half time, a well worked attack by Guildford - Katie took the roll in the centre and moved the ball forward to Kat who drove along the right to the base line and brought the ball into the D and passed to Katie, who scored to level.
The second half continued the end-to-end hockey with both sides moving the ball well. East Grinstead had the slight initiative and looked more likely to score. Holly was making some good saves, but one attack resulted in a penalty corner. East Grinstead duly scored and restored their lead. Guildford fought hard and for the remainder of the game looked the more likely to score, but the defence held strong and there were no more goals, the final result 2-1 to East Grinstead.
Despite the loss, the Ladies were pleased with their performance. It was good to see new-comers Katie and Kat settling in and being influential parts of the team. The L1s host Eastbourne this coming weekend at home and will be seeking to restore their winning ways. |
