Today the Ladies 1s travelled down to Worthing. There were high expectations off the back of the team's strong start to the season, having lost only one match and improving every time we play.
The Ladies took to the pitch in what were the first winter conditions, with a bitterly cold wind coming off the sea. From the whistle Guildford took the initiative and the first attack led to Kerry scoring the opening goal. We continued to dominate and within a few minutes another attack saw Guildford being awarded a penalty corner. Alice Lane struck the ball from the top of the D and Kerry got her stick to the ball and the score was 2-0 after 5 minutes.
Dominance continued and Guildford spent most of the time in Worthing’s half. We continually moved the ball around and on a number of occasions found that Sammy, from her right back position had worked her way up to the opposition D and was taking a shot on goal! The constant attacks soon resulted in another penalty corner. A repeat of the first, this time with Kate finishing to take the score to 3-0.
Worthing continually soaked up pressure from Guildford but towards the end of the first half their defence could hold out no longer and after some good passing from the midfield Kate scored her second goal to bring the score to 4-0 at half time.
The second half started in a similar vein to the first with Guildford full of confidence. The passing continued to work well and it was not long before an attack resulted in Kate scoring her 3rd goal and Guildford’s 5th. Worthing did not give up and were proving harder to beat and were beginning to create opportunities for themselves. One of these resulted in a penalty corner from which they scored.
Guildford then responded with attack after attack and again spent most of the time in the Worthing half. A result of one attack was a P flick. Alice Lane stepped up to take it, but it was saved by the keeper. However, soon after the 16 Guildford intercepted the ball and found an opposition foot in the D and the resulting penalty corner was struck cleanly by Alice O’H to take Guildford’s lead to 6-1. Worthing kept fighting, but the defence remained strong and Libby proved very frustrating to the opposition forwards. We were able to counter attack and created an opportunity for Hetti to drive into the D and she scored her first goal making the score 7-1. From the re-start Alice O’H intercepted the ball and took the ball into the D and scored her second goal. This proved to be the final result, 8-1
Guildford are currently in 3rd place on goal difference from East Grinstead and only 3 points behind Surbiton, both of whom are to be played in the next few weeks. This should make an exciting run up to the Christmas break!
